The following steps will show how to install recessed lighting in existing ceiling:
Prepare the required tools: a hammer, drywall saw, measuring tape, a pencil, stud finder, screwdrivers, drill, pliers, and a mask for your personal safety. Before you start make sure the electrical power is turned off before you attempt installing the recessed lighting.

  • You have to determine the exact locations of the ceiling joists you can use the stud finder to do that, now you need to mark the recessed lighting placement locations between the joists according to the previously planned recessed lighting layout and spacing calculations.
  • In each marked location, draw the shape of your fixture using the template, which comes with your recessed lighting fixture.
  • You have to make sure the recessed lighting fixture be installed between the ceiling joists and not hitting any of the joists. To find out if there is enough clearance between the joists to install the fixture housing, make a small central hole in the shape you draw and use a wire to know how far the joists are. If there is no enough space the practical placement location may slightly shift than the evaluated one to allow the housing fit between the joists.
  • Use a drywall saw to cut the fixture outlines you draw on the ceiling and make sure not to cut any electrical wire that may exist above the drywall ceiling. Make sure the hole you cut will fit the fixture housing.
  • Now the wiring stage, connect the wires from the ceiling junction box (the electrical power source) and pull it down from the fixture holes. Now connect the wires to the recessed fixtures according to the fixture manufacture’s instructions. If need help with the wiring you should hire an electrician.
  • Slid the recessed light up into the ceiling starting with the fixture junction box, then insert the housing and make sure the housing is right fitted to the hole. Now push the clips toward the outside of the can light to be hugging the drywall.
  • Now connect the housing trim, simply use the trim clips to connect it with the housing until it hugging the ceiling.
  • Insert the light bulb into the recessed light and make sure the recessed light bulb meets the fixture specifications, and you are ready to test the light.
