Recessed Lighting Spacing & Placement Calculator

Here we will preview practical examples for recessed lighting spacing and placement calculations based on recessed lighting spacing formulas. And will tell you how to check if the determined recessed lighting placement locations are ready for can lighting installation.

For example 15*10 foot room

The area=15*10= 150 square feet
Total watts required for this area =150*1.5 =225 watts
If you plan to use 40 watt traditional bulbs, you will need six 40 watt bulbs
Let’ calculate the exact placement locations
Consider the recessed lighting layout consists of two vertical rows and three horizontal rows

6 Recessed Lights Spacing

  • Distance between recessed lights in the vertical rows =15/3= 5 feet.
  • Distance between first light and the wall is the same as the distance between the last one and the other wall in the vertical rows =5 /2 =2.5 feet.
  • Distance between recessed lights in the horizontal rows =10/2= 5 feet.
  • Distance between first light and the wall is the same as the distance between the last one and the other wall in the horizontal rows =5 /2 =2.5 feet.

6 Recessed Lights Placement

The below figure shows the placement locations

6 recessed lighting layout spacing

Consider this room will be used as a kitchen room

The required total wattage will be 150*2= 300 watts, 2 is the average wattage per foot square
If you plan to use 60 watt traditional bulbs, you will need five 60 watt bulbs
Let’ calculate the exact placement locations
Consider the recessed lighting layout consists of two vertical rows, two horizontal rows and one recessed light in the center of the kitchen room

5 Recessed Lights Spacing calculations

  • Distance between recessed lights in the vertical rows =15/2= 7.5 feet.
  • Distance between first light and the wall is the same as the distance between the last one and the other wall in the vertical rows =7.5 /2 =3.75 feet.
  • Distance between recessed lights in the horizontal rows =10/2= 5 feet.
  • Distance between first light and the wall is the same as the distance between the last one and the other wall in the horizontal rows =5 /2 =2.5 feet.
  • The recessed light in the center its dimensions will be vertically 15/2= 7.5 feet, horizontal 10/2= 5 feet.

5 Recessed Lights Placement locations

The below figure shows the placement locations

5 recessed lighting layout placement

If you plan to use 40 watt traditional bulbs, you will need eight 40 watt bulbs
Let’ calculate the exact placement locations
Consider the recessed lighting layout consists of two vertical rows, three horizontal rows and two recessed lights in the center of the kitchen room forming a vertical row.

8 Recessed Lights Spacing calculations

  • Distance between recessed lights in the vertical rows =15/3= 5 feet.
  • Distance between first light and the wall is the same as the distance between the last one and the other wall in the vertical rows =5 /2 =2.5 feet.
  • Distance between recessed lights in the horizontal rows =10/3= 3.33 feet.
  • Distance between first light and the wall is the same as the distance between the last one and the other wall in the horizontal rows =3.33/2 =1.67 feet.
For the vertical row in the middle
  • Vertically the distance between recessed lights is the same as the distance between the lights and the wall =15/3= 5 feet.
  • Horizontally the lights are in the middle 10/2=5 feet

After you get the exact recessed lighting placement points, you have to check if the lights can be installed at these points. You have to determine where the ceiling joist are located you may use a stud finder to do that.
